Tractors and Hogs -- Caleb

Today, June 23, we had a wonderful hour and a half drive to Moline, Illinois, starting early at 6 AM to go see the John Deere Harvester Works. I was blown away with how fast the employees at John Deere were able to put together the massive harvesters. The technology in the factory was also the top of the line, which was very impressive to watch and learn how they operate. After we went to the John Deere factory we drove another two hours to Kalona, Iowa to visit Brenneman Pork.

While at Brenneman Pork we were given a nice presentation by Erin Brenneman, Adam Hocker and Rob Brenneman. It is incredible how far Rob Brenneman has made it. I was excited when we were told how Mr. Brenneman’s high school teacher told him he would not make it in the swine business unless he inherited the farm. He told us that he kept farming anyway because it was his passion, and I knew he was determined and wasn’t going to give up. He bought land and opened his first farm in 1981. Now in 2017 The Brenneman’s have over 35,000 sows (female pigs) and produce about a million pigs a year. For each pig being sold, it takes 165 days from birth to market. We had a very informative presentation which we all greatly appreciated and learned the other side of pigs, market vs. show pigs.
