Today on
Saturday, June 24th we went to see the Amish and the New Day Dairy.
We first went to see the Amish milking goat farm were we were introduced to three
different breeds of goats: Alpine, Toggenburg and Saanen. The milking parlor was recently updated and
holds 24 goats for milking on each side. After viewing the milking parlor we
saw were they eat and are kept in 3 holding pens. The farm had over 200 does (female goats). I
got to pet them and they were very friendly and wanted attention.
After viewing
the dairy goat farm, we went to Stringtown Buggy Shop. They build the buggies
from hand and use tools that run off of compressed air. Buggies are painted black
and are made of a variety of materials.
We went to eat a
delicious Amish meal that was prepared by Ms. Salina, a Mennonite in the
community.
Ms. Nancy, from
the Historical Museum in Kalona, Iowa, showed us around explaining anything we
were curious about. I had a really good day it was full of all new things I
have never seen before. Never before had I met an Amish person, my only
experience was what I had seen on television. In my opinion TV portrays them in
a way that causes people to believe that they shun anyone who was not a member
of the Amish community. However, they were much more friendlier than the
television portrays them.
Then came a two-hour
drive to New Day Dairy. The dairy has a robotic arm that prepared and milked
the cows. There were 105 dairy cows. The dairy was very nice place, the dairy
was high-tech for a dairy.
